Recording the Past, Challenging the Future.

Nelson’s oldest community organisation, founded in 1841 to promote learning and public discussion.

About the Institute

Founded in 1841, the Nelson Institute has been part of the city’s cultural life for more than 180 years. It began as the Nelson Literary and Scientific Institution, opening the first library and museum in Nelson.

Today, the Institute continues that tradition by encouraging discussion, learning, and community connection across arts, science, and public life.
